Possible IVF Complication You Should Know About

In Vitro Fertilization has emerged as a godsend procedure, allowing reproductively challenged couples with a chance to experience the joys of childbirth and parenthood. It uses technology and medical intervention to assist Nature to accomplish what it has failed to do for a couple. The procedure is safe, time tested and effective with more than a hundred thousand babies now born as a result of IVF treatments. However, there are certain complications and risk factors related to the treatment that you should know and find out about during your next visit to your IVF center in Goa. Here is a list for your understanding and perusal:

Multiple births:  IVF follows the approach of implanting multiple embryos in the patient’s uterus to increase the chances of them taking hold and becoming a viable fetus. This practice however, carries the possibility of a multiple pregnancy, which in itself is a risky condition fraught with complications like premature labor and low birth weight.

Ovarian hyper stimulation syndrome:  Fertility treatments usually involve administration of ovulation inducing drugs and injectable like human chorionic gonadotropin. These treatments might lead the patient towards ovarian hyper stimulation syndrome wherein her ovaries can become swollen and painful, along with other symptoms like weight gain, bloating, nausea, diarrhea and more.

Miscarriage: The chances of miscarriages increase exponentially in IVF induced pregnancies with increasing maternal age.

Ectopic pregnancy: Around 2-5% women who conceive using IVF treatments experience an ectopic pregnancy whereby the fertilized egg implants itself outside the uterus, most commonly in the fallopian tube. There is no way to continue the pregnancy in this scenario.

Egg retrieval complications: The procedure involves using an aspirational needle to retrieve eggs which might induce bleeding, infections or damage to the bowel, blood vessels or bladder (through which the needle will pass). Risks associated with general anesthesia are also present, if used in this procedure.

Make sure you discuss these factors with the doctors and specialists available at your IVF center in Goa. Going ahead with full information about the procedure will only help you better prepare yourself for what lies ahead.
